The badminton court with dimensions and designations

Net: The top edge of the net is 1.55 metres from the ground on the outside and 1.524 metres in the middle as the tensioning rope is slack.

Lines: They belong to the playing court or the service courts. Depending on the game situation, the centre line sometimes belongs to the left and sometimes to the right service court.

The rules of the game in a nutshell:

The rules of badminton are simple, almost straightforward. The player smashes the ball twenty-one times onto the floor of the opponent's court. And if the opponent still hasn't had enough, you switch sides of the court and do the same thing again from there: point, set and match! Accordingly, the basic rules can be learnt quickly.

The game begins with the serve, which is to be played into the diagonally opposite service court of the opponent. If the server has an even number of points, he serves from the right; if he has an odd number of points, he serves from the left. The opponent's score is irrelevant. The serve must be executed from below.

Each player has the right to serve as long as he wins the rallies and collects points. If he loses a rally, the opponent receives a point and the right to serve.

Two sets to 21 points are played in all disciplines - i.e. men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed - and competitions. However, if the score is 20:20 or higher, a two-point lead must be achieved. At 29:29, the next rally is decisive. The closest score is therefore 30:29.

After the first set, the players switch sides of the court. There is a two-minute break during which a conversation with a coach is permitted. If there is still no winner after two sets, a third set is played after a further two-minute break. There is a one-minute break within each set when the leading team has reached 11 points.

The sides are changed again in the third set.
